Overtaking

I realized it'd been almost a month since my last garden update and I can't have that.

The potatoes are dying back in the, well, back.  My corn has popped it's top (and we'll start getting some here pretty soon).  And my kids pumpkins are taking over the ENTIRE garden.  Seriously.

Plus, Josh's sunflower has finally opened.  Isn't it pretty?

So far we have two large pumpkins and this morning I noticed two little ones just starting off.

For the longest time we only had this one watermelon.  One lonely watermelon, but today I found another.  I think it's even a different variety (the kids planted a couple).  Hopefully, it'll keep growing until it gets nice and big like this one.

Look at this beautiful tomato!!  I have lots like this, I can hardly wait for them to turn something other than green.  You know, orange, purple, red, striped...I'm really not picky.

This is a blossom from one of our cucumber plants.  I love blossoms.  I think I may have mentioned that before.

And this is one of those cucumber plants offspring.  Isn't it awesome?  I haven't tasted it yet, although I did pick it yesterday.  It's skin is a little fuzzy and sort of reminds me of a peach.  Kind of strange, but still cool.

What's your favorite produce to plant, pick and eat?  Or does that need three different answers?

2 Months Old

Well, it was almost two months ago that I first posted about my garden.

My tiny, little almost bare garden.

It's not so bare anymore.  Although, there are a few blank spots where I tried something that didn't quite grow.  Or where I've left room for growing things to grow a little more (or a lot with regards to those popping pumpkins and winding watermelons).

I think my favorite thing, second only to the eating the yummy fruit and vegetables themselves, are the beautiful blossoms. 

This is on my bush beans.

Growing, Growing, Growing

I'm having more fun documenting my garden that I thought I would.  It's pretty awesome to watch it grow (even though it's getting a little weed-ey...I've been working in other parts of my yard and neglecting my portions of the garden a little).

This is the first year I've planed my corn in stages.  I've wanted to for a while, but I was always afraid I'd plant some and never get around the planting the rest.  But I did it!  There are four sections and they're all planted about a week and a half apart.

The section above shows how much my beans have grown (I can't wait to eat some) and my tomatoes.  The one in the farthest cage is doing pretty good, but the closest one isn't.  I can't figure out why.  I've watered and told it how pretty it is and how much I'm looking forward to eating it's tomatoes (just like the other plants) and it still doesn't seem to want to grow.  Darn it.

This front section is my kids (that's why it's better weeded...mostly).  They love to come out and check how their fruit and vegetables are doing and excitedly want to show me any changes...all the time.  I should have given them their own plots a long time ago.

Garden Update

It's amazing what a difference a few weeks can make in a garden.  Look at my potatoes, they're HUGE!  I've planted several other things, but not much else is big enough to see yet...it's growing though.  I love watching it come to life.

Look at my strawberries, they're getting so big I can almost taste them.  It won't be long. 

I find it amazing how very green pea plants are.  So, so green.  And they feel thick and healthy.  They've recently started blossoming and they're gorgeous! 

How's your garden growing?  I'd love to hear about it, or your dreams of having one someday.  In fact, start today, even if you only have one pot, you can begin your garden dream!!

Garden Beginnings

I've kept a garden for the last several years with varying degrees of luck.  My very favorites to plant are potatoes, corn (which I haven't planted yet...I'm slacking), and tomatoes.  Yum. 

I thought it'd be fun to take pictures of my garden over the next few months to sort of track it's progress.  It's always amazing to me how the barren garden can spring to life so very quickly.

This first picture show the kids area.  The garden always ends up with a slightly different configuration each year and after thinking about getting my kids more involved, I'm finally doing it this year. 

Each of the kids gets their own 4' x 4' area to plant whatever they want (out of the seeds I already have floating around).  They've been working on weeding it over the last week or so and James finally got his planted today (his is the just watered, darker square).  Josh and Makenna still have a little more weeding to do.

I finally planted lettuce, swiss chard and some spinach today (I'm late with these, too) and can't wait to see them poking up out of the ground!!

Here's my potato bed, already going to town.  I just finished weeding it today, doesn't it look nice?  I can hardly wait to pull our first potatoes out, you wouldn't believe how white the flesh is when you cut them open, amazing (plus, they taste pretty good, too)!

And the garden as a whole.  Well, almost, you can't see my trellis on the right hand side where my peas are languishing because I haven't put up any netting yet.  I should probably do that soon.
